about

Originally released by Kraftwerk on the album "Trans Europa Express" (1977/Kling Klang)

If anyone thinks that Kraftwerk needs an introduction, go get it elsewhere. Of all the electronic pioneers, these Düsseldorf gentlemen are probably the most covered band of them all and musicians everywhere have tried to re-create their cold, computerized close-to-perfect techno pop, ending up as copy cats with no dignity whatsoever. So, how do you cover music like this, maintaining the core feeling of the original? You simply don't. Period. I still wanted to include Kraftwerk in this and was browsing my collection for a suitable song. At first, I started out with the title song of this album, but realized that it would be impossible for me to improve it. The folk music feeling of Spiegelsaal caught my attention, quite different from their other songs and it was all systems go. Instead of sticking to the original's machinelike sound I transferred it to some fictional Eastern European misty mountains, making it a semi-classical, pseudo-industrial faery-tale hymn with quite uncomfortable frequencies. I always preferred the German versions of their songs but got the perhaps extremely pretentious idea to mix both versions of the lyrics just for the fun of it.

Since Kraftwerk is a highly revered band close to godhood among fans of electronic music, I am prepared to get flogged senseless for this blasphemy. Still, it's my nature to be an iconoclast and whatever some people might think of this, I love and respect the band a lot and personally see this humble version as my homage.
