about

Originally released by Pet Shop Boys as a b-side of "Suburbia" (1986/Parlophone)

I got my hands on the PSB single West End Girls when it was released and liked it a lot. When I later borrowed the follow-up album "Please", I was totally hooked, forgot to tape it at first and played it over and over for weeks, resulting in serious scratching. My friend was not too happy and I had to pay for it, which was a big deal to me back then because my pocket money wasn't really enough for buying records at the time. The album track "Suburbia" was a nice tune, but the single-version that I got much later blew it away totally. The b-side was (and is) totally awesome and is in my opinion one of the best songs from that period. That very vinyl single is still a part of my collection, and wise from experience I treated it more gently, saving it from ending up scratched beyond helping.

"Paninaro" was one of my first obvious choices for this project, and my intention was to give it a cold, military feeling far from its original catchy and dancable beat. You don't dance to this one, you march. Wearing an Armani suit, of course.
