about

Originally released by Fad Gadget as a 7" single (1980/Mute Records)

The late Frank Tovey was with no doubt one of the coolest guys in the electronic pop business in the early eighties. When most of the bands did their best to look cute, androgynous and harmless, chanting boy-meets-girl/boy-songs, Frank did it his own way with spaced-out lyrics and stage shows that more resembled Throbbing Gristle than the other synthetic pop bands of that time. Also, collaborating with unexpected acts like Boyd Rice and Einstürzende Neubauten gives him a priceless credit in my book. I never intended to make versions of any singles for this project, but what good are your own rules if you don't break them? This song's original is such a damn well crafted piece that I just had to put my tools to it, ending up with a version I strongly believe mr Tovey would approve of. I had the honour to see his very last performance at SAMA 2002, a short time before the sad news of his early passing reached us.

So, my drinking manners are way better than Ricky's when I raise my glass and salute this great artist. Here's to you, Frank, wherever you decided to go. Vaya con Eris!
